| Our
Mission |
| The Energy Literacy Project, Inc. (ELP) is an educational and informational project designed to
achieve a cultural change in how society views energy. This will
be accomplished through the development of educational and
informational programs that recognize the interlocking nature of
energy, the economy, and the environment: the 3E's. |

| History |
| The Energy Literacy Project (ELP) was formed in 1993 out of
the realization that the public was not articulating its
concern over how important energy was in its economic well
being and in its quality of life. This appeared to be
one of the primary reasons why there has been no stable nor
well-reasoned national energy policy. Regardless of ever
getting such a policy, the ELP believes that raising public
literacy in the area of energy is a worthy endeavor.
Therefore, the ELP was incorporated as a 501(c)(3)
non-profit, educational and informational program in
1996. Its programs are aimed at bringing balanced
material that incorporates the interlocking nature of Energy,
the Economy, and the Environment to the public. The
initial programs are designed to be the prerequisite course
that is needed before anyone can fully understand programs on
oil & gas, nuclear, renewable or other policy issues.
Recognizing that the messenger is just as important as the
message, the ELP is proposing to create these programs for the
National Geographic Society or similar credible organizations.

Profile |
|
The ELP is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation
composed of professionals and organizations representing education and the
energy industry. We believe that the cultural change we seek can take place
through balanced programs incorporating the 3Es and emphasizing how society's
economic well-being is affected by the availability and cost of energy, and how
the consumption of energy impacts society's quality of life. This balance
emphasizes good science, consideration of alternatives, and cost-benefit
analysis.
We are currently in Phase II of the project, where
we are testing this concept of balance and the 3Es by designing programs with
this theme for K-12. While we expect these products to be quite valuable in
their own right, the field test of the concept in the schools will direct the
ELP toward its Phase III efforts. These are aimed at the rest of society. As a
part of Phase II we have created this website for science teachers and
coordinators to use as a means of viewing and assessing the currently available
programs. Please use this resource, which we will continue to update as
individual programs improve in any or all areas.
