National Geographic Society Kids Network

The NGS provides several non-energy related teaching units that use the internet to help children learn not only science, but how to perform experiments. Their only energy related Unit is their Solar Energy package. In general, this is a fun way for kids in grades 3 through 6 to learn a bit about solar energy. The NGS tends to focus more on the environmental concerns in their science units. Any improvement on the Solar Unit or any new unit written about other types of energy should include more emphasis on the economic trade-off than already exists.

The NGS Kids Network Solar Energy Unit introduces children to the idea of energy that comes from the sun. It falls a bit short when it comes to making the point that all energy comes from the sun, whether it is in the direct form of sunshine or the less direct form of coal. However, in this age of computers as tools, the NGS vehicle helps teachers to teach children to use the computer to learn about what is happening in other areas of the world.
